History Black Jazz originally was only in business from 1971 to 1976 when it closed on the death of its founder, pianist Gene Russell. In the 1990s, James Hardge purchased the catalog and began reissuing the material on both vinyl and CD. Eventually the operation switched to being a distributor of mp3s before closing again.
